These pieces are a part of an ongoing personal project. In this series of illustrations I am exploring the different folk names for the full moon associated with each month. The phases of the moon have been used to track time and mark the seasons since the dawn of humanity.
Many cultures have named the full moons in accordance with the changes occurring in nature at that time of year and what agricultural practices should be in the midst of. The names commonly used in modern American folk tradition draw from those used by Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, and Native American groups. With this series I want to capture what each of these moons represent within the larger structure of the year’s seasonal progression.
